Spotlight on Zach Verriden, REEP Alum & New Blogger.

Hey all!

I know that there are so many incredible folks like you around the country working to improve educational outcomes for kids…and how cool is it that we can connect via the REEP blog?!  My name is Zach, and I look forward to trying to figure this out together.

I currently serve as the principal of HOPE Christian High School in Milwaukee, WI.  I am new to the gig, and Milwaukee, and REEP blog for that matter, but not new to education reform!

Laura Arnold on Leadership and How to Advocate for Education

I sat down recently with Laura Arnold, Adjunct Professor of Management at the Jones Graduate School of Business and President of the Laura and John Arnold Family Foundation, to talk on the topic of leadership at the Jones School of Business as well as solicit ideas for how individuals can contribute to education, regardless of their professional tracks.

I’d long wanted to meet Laura Arnold. Her Legal Issues in Mergers and Acquisitions course was highly reviewed by my fellow colleagues while at the Jones School, and her combination of broad leadership experience and passionate involvement in education initiatives positioned her perfectly for a conversation centering on both topics. Ms. Arnold simultaneously conveys a delightful, welcoming presence and razor-sharp intellect and drive, and I found our visit absolutely terrific.

REEP receives a generous grant from Houston Endowment

Thanks to a $3.475 million grant to Rice University from Houston Endowment, more than 100 Houston-area K-12 school leaders will have the opportunity to learn better management and other skills through the Rice Educational Entrepreneurship Program (REEP).

REEP is an advanced degree and certificate program that prepares educational leaders to close achievement gaps and improve high school graduation rates. Offered through Rice’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, REEP equips its students with the business, innovation, organization and financial management tools they need to develop hands-on solutions to problems facing schools.

The Houston Endowment grant, with support from Rice University, will help fund enrollment and tuition fees for more than 100 participants. The latest grant is in addition to a $7.2 million grant Houston Endowment awarded REEP in 2008, bringing the endowment’s funding of the program to nearly $10.7 million.

Our Rising Star: Meet Michael Harrison

Reaping Rewards

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Michael Harrison (Rice MBA Class of’ 2010) came to Houston with Teach For America in 2001. He taught English and reading at Hogg Middle School for five years while earning his Masters of Education. Michael left the classroom and became an administrator at Burbank Middle School where he learned about the opportunity to earn a Rice MBA through the Rice Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP).

“After three years of administrative experience, I had reached a point where I was looking for more of an academic challenge that would stretch my leadership capacity,” Harrison says. “I thought REEP would be an amazing opportunity to stretch my thinking and gain a different approach to education.”
