The best problem solvers are those who come up with original, yet elegant solutions. Solutions that make you think: “That’s so clearly the right way to solve this – I could have come up with that!” But you didn’t. How come someone else did? What’s their secret?

When we are faced with a problem, it presents itself in a simple way. “This kid failed the math test.” “This kid is obese.” Nothing is more tempting than staying with this “presenting problem,” and jumping to a solution. Failed the math test? Let’s give you some math tutoring. Gained too much weight? Let’s recommend a diet.
But more often than not, the “presenting problem” is not the full story. It is almost always worth looking for the “real problem” underneath.
