REEP Business Fellowship student, Arlene Lassin, presented her project on November 12, 2011 to a group of educators during the REEP Innovation Showcase at Rice University. Below is a snapshot of her interesting project.
Talent Identification Selection System
In the coming year LMISD has projected 30-40 teaching positions to open due to upcoming teacher retirements. La Marque administrators will soon be focusing to recruit the very best teachers for their schools with exceptional teaching talent. To accomplish this task, Arlene Lassin has devised the Talent Identification Selection System, a hiring system based on research done by Martin Haberman, a nationally acclaimed education researcher.
Lassin’s system consists of a three-step hiring process which ultimately results in the selection of the most effective and passionate teachers. Firstly, teachers are pre-screened with three standard short answer questions as part of their online application. Answers to these questions are scored as either high, moderate, or low based on a hiring rubric. Administrators are looking for “high” answers which show a teacher will build relationships with students, model a love of learning, and invest in student success. If teachers exceed LMISD’s threshold of expectations, they are invited to a rigorous personal interview, where they are evaluated on their ability to form connections with students, parents, and peers, and their compassion, accountability, persistence, motivation, respect for a diversity of learning styles, and commitment to teaching. Again, candidates are scored using a rubric. The final step in the selection process involves a model teaching session by the candidate and evaluation via rubric. Final hiring decisions are aided by the candidate’s collective scores on all rubrics for all parts of the selection process.
Lassin’s system has been expertly designed, and is a great model for any school leader who wishes to hire talented teachers. For additional information, please contact Kim Huseman, REEP Associate Director of Programming & Talent Development, at email@example.com
