Hello again everyone! In my last blog post, I mentioned that I’m currently serving as the President of the Rice University Education Leadership Club. I’d like to take this opportunity to formally introduce the club and share some news regarding our exciting plans for the year.
Amanda Nicolo and I founded the Education Leadership Club last spring with the support of the REEP team. Â The purpose of the Education Leadership Club is to raise awareness in the graduate community as to issues in education and leadership opportunities in the sector.
We pursue this mission by hosting programs and events that allow our members to develop a better understanding of education policy and issues affecting our community. For instance, last spring we hosted the inaugural Education Leadership Symposium featuring the topic Financing our Education System to discuss how the budget debate of the 82nd legislative session was going to affect schools in Houston. This year, we will further explore issues in education such as this and expose students to organizations that are active in the local market. Our club website and Facebook page are updated with more detailed information and serve as the best resource for staying current on our upcoming events.
Another focus of the Education Leadership Club is to help graduate students identify professional opportunities related to education. Several second-year MBAs, including myself, had the opportunity to work for Education Pioneers this last summer. The fellowship allowed each of us to apply our skill set to strategic issues in schools, districts and nonprofit organizations. We are strongly encouraging first-year students to pursue this fellowship opportunity as a summer internship.
With regards to second-year MBAs at the Jones School and other graduate programs at Rice, I’m currently compiling a database of full-time professional opportunities. Are you aware of any open positions for graduate students in the education sector? If so, I would greatly appreciate the information so that I can pass it along to my classmates. Feel free to simply respond to this post or email me at kla2@rice.edu.
Thank you in advance for any leads you can share!
