My family has a shared interest in education. Today I am interviewing my sister, Tara Mason, who is a doctoral student in special education at Texas Tech University. As part of her five year doctoral program, she is planning to minor in educational technology. Previously, Tara served as a special education teacher at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired as well as an English and art teacher at a small private school in Austin, TX. In addition to her doctoral studies, Tara currently observes and evaluates first year teachers in their K-12 public school classrooms all over Austin. Her primary areas of study are student learning, effective instruction, and incorporation of technology in the classroom.
The topic of educational technology is receiving a great deal of attention. For the sake of today’s discussion, we have decided to focus on three primary areas of concern with the understanding that there are many challenges related to the effective use of technology (to be discussed in another interview, perhaps!). So to begin…

Several organizations are partnering with National School Choice week to organize a rally that will invite school leaders, parents, teachers, legislators, reporters, and community business leaders to demonstrate their support for school choice. It’s time to show the public and community leaders how diverse support is for school choice. This event is an initiative that seeks to increase awareness and support for all schools of choice.

As the first semester of another school year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on an interview from The Colbert Report that I saw back in August. Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, was the special guest for the evening, and he was promoting his new book called Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose. At the time, I found the topic almost too blaise to be worthy of national attention.Â
He spoke about happiness. More specifically, he presented happiness as a viable business model, including a brief discussion on the ten core values of Zappos, focusing on the number one principle: “Deliver WOW through service.”
 I remember thinking, “Well, of course people perform better when they’re happy. Who wouldn’t?” But with the holiday season upon us, Hsieh’s words seem very poignant.Â
