A few months ago, we released a blog post about Ted.com by Leslie Nelson to inform you, our readers, about this extremely interesting and giant community involving people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.

Today, REEP would like to share with you more information about an upcoming TEDx Youth event, which will be happening here in the Greater Houston area, and to encourage you to attend. There’s still time to register!

On January 7th, 2012 the second TEDx event in The Woodlands goes live in the same beautiful venue, the Music Hall. This event’s theme is “Imaginate – Imagine & Create“.  Both adults and mature youth are invited to attend. Over 15 adult and youth speakers and performers will share how they “Imaginate” a better world.

REEP Innovation Project: Spotlight On Arlene Lassin

REEP Business Fellowship student, Arlene Lassin, presented her project on November 12, 2011 to a group of educators during the REEP Innovation Showcase at Rice University. Below is a snapshot of her interesting project.

Talent Identification Selection System

In the coming year LMISD has projected 30-40 teaching positions to open due to upcoming teacher retirements. La Marque administrators will soon be focusing to recruit the very best teachers for their schools with exceptional teaching talent. To accomplish this task, Arlene Lassin has devised the Talent Identification Selection System, a hiring system based on research done by Martin Haberman, a nationally acclaimed education researcher.

Celebrate!

The holidays have begun for people of all faiths and beliefs!  Streets and stores are decorated.  The radio plays non-stop holiday songs.  Parties are scheduled and shopping is in full swing.  It seems to begin earlier each year and can seem overwhelming.  However, why not make these joyous occasions a year-around occurrence, at least the celebrating part?

Occupy Education: Good Luck Finding a Room.

One cannot attempt to stay abreast of current issues without colliding with the most recent field report from a public park or city square.  The Occupy movement has become a significant part of the American discourse.  Its constituents proffer a barrage of valid observations on a breadth of inequities in American society, but a cogent set of grievances or demands have yet to be articulated. 

Douglas Rushkoff of CNN tries to assuage a bit of the angst many experience with regard to a lack of consensus within the movement by explaining, “We are witnessing America’s first true Internet-era movement, which doesn’t take its cue from a charismatic leader, express itself in bumper-sticker length goals, and understand itself as having a particular endpoint…This is not a movement with a traditional narrative arc.  As a product of the decentralized networked-era culture, it is less about victory than sustainability.  It is not about one-pointedness, but inclusion and groping toward consensus.  It is not a book; it is like the internet.”  Though there might not be a central message, a few recurring themes seem consistent with regard to education.
